Born in 1980 in Cotonou, Benin, Smartzee lived across 3 different continents, later settling in Switzerland . He cut his first song in a neighborhood studio with friends—raw, energetic, “classic ego trip” style lyrics introducing himself and his crew .
Smartzee got his big break in 2004 when he featured on “Et c’est parti…” by French R&B star Nâdiya, released in June 2004. The single reached #2 in France and topped Belgian charts, staying in the top 5 for 22 weeks and earning a silver certification in France .
He continued collaborating with Nâdiya, notably on 2006’s “Tous ces mots”, which peaked at #2 in France . During this period, he also featured with artists like Gilles Luka and Ocean Drive, and began writing for several artists including Clara Morgane (“Nous Deux”).
The massive success of “Et c’est parti…” marked his breakthrough, as Smartzee noted the public recognition: “people I had never met were turning their heads, giving me nods” .
Smartzee also started touring the world an energetic MC who turned the heat in many clubs; from the famous VIP Room of Paris, St-Tropez to the Nikki Beach clubs, and with JC of WeAreValencia.
He launched his solo career with The Wishmaster in December 2008 —a significant move from featured guest to independent artist.
In 2025, Smartzee dropped LEGACY, anchored by the lead single “Back Down” (produced by Rujay). Critics praise its gritty anthem and honest resilience: “a relentless rallying cry for the underdogs” .
